2026 Silverado 1500 Engines, Towing and Payload

The 2026 Silverado 1500 tows up to 13,300 lbs with the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel and carries up to 2,260 lbs of payload, properly equipped.

Built for Colorado Springs: Altitude, Winter and Front Range Towing

Colorado Springs sits at about 6,000 feet, and most of the driving around here climbs from there. A Silverado 1500 that feels strong at sea level gets tested on the run up Ute Pass to Woodland Park, the climb over Monument Hill on I-25, or a weekend trailer haul toward Buena Vista. The 2026 lineup offers four engines, so there’s a right answer for how you actually drive.

Choosing an engine for thin air

Engines without a turbocharger lose some power as you gain elevation, because each breath pulls in less air. Turbocharged engines push air in under pressure, so they hold more of their rated output up high. Two 2026 Silverado engines are turbocharged: the 2.7L TurboMax (310 hp, 430 lb-ft) and the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel (305 hp, 495 lb-ft). The Duramax also tows the most in the lineup, up to 13,300 lbs, and is rated at up to 28 mpg highway. That matters on long stretches of US-24 and US-285, where fuel stops are far apart.

If you want V8 sound and simplicity, the 6.2L V8 makes 420 hp and tows up to 13,200 lbs when properly equipped. Pulling a camper over a pass is different from pulling one across Kansas. Towing along the Front Range

Campers headed to the Arkansas River, boats to Pueblo Reservoir, and horse trailers out east on Highway 24 make up much of what Front Range trucks pull. The 2026 Silverado offers Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert and an In-Vehicle Trailering App with trailer profiles and pre-departure checklists. On High Country, available Super Cruise works hands-free with a trailer on compatible roads. That takes some strain off long highway pulls like I-25 to Denver.

Winter here is a specific kind of winter

Colorado Springs winters swing from 60°F sun to a spring storm that drops a foot of snow overnight. When Colorado’s Traction Law is active, drivers on affected highways need 4WD or AWD, or tires with adequate tread. Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss come with the Z71 Off-Road Package, a 2-inch factory lift, a two-speed Autotrac transfer case and an automatic locking rear differential, which helps on unplowed county roads and forest service access roads.

Weekend trails

For Rampart Range Road, Gold Camp Road or the trails around Cripple Creek, the ZR2 brings Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear e-lockers, aluminum underbody skid plates and 33-inch mud-terrain tires. The Trail Boss trims get you most of the way there for less.

ZR2 vs. Trail Boss vs. Z71 vs. High Country: Which 2026 Silverado Fits You?

2026 Silverado ZR2

The ZR2 is the most capable off-road Silverado 1500. The 3.0L Duramax is standard and the 6.2L V8 is available. It has a 2-inch lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear e-lockers, an off-road front bumper with a 33.5-degree approach angle, large aluminum skid plates and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires. It also gets a 15-inch head-up display and the Multi-Flex Tailgate. The ZR2 Bison adds AEV bumpers, AEV skid plates for the differentials, transfer case and fuel tank, and 18-inch AEV wheels.

2026 Silverado LT Trail Boss and Custom Trail Boss

The LT Trail Boss has a 2-inch factory lift, the Z71 Off-Road Package, a two-speed Autotrac transfer case, an automatic locking rear differential and 20-inch high-gloss black wheels. All four engines are offered, from the standard TurboMax up to the 6.2L V8 and the Duramax. The Custom Trail Boss keeps the lift, Z71, Autotrac and skid plates with 18-inch black wheels and mud-terrain tires at a lower price.

Z71 Off-Road Package

Z71 is a package, not a trim, and it’s available on most Silverado 1500 trims. It comes standard on the Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss, where it’s paired with a 2-inch factory suspension lift. The package adds:

• Rancho monotube shocks, front and rear, tuned for off-road use
• Steel skid plates that protect the engine, transfer case and fuel tank
• An Autotrac two-speed transfer case with true four-wheel-drive low range
• An automatic locking rear differential that engages when a rear wheel loses traction

2026 Silverado High Country

The High Country is the luxury trim. It has premium leather with custom perforation, open-pore wood trim, a 13.4-inch touchscreen, 8 cameras with up to 14 views, and the 5.3L V8 standard. Super Cruise with hands-free trailering is available, and the 6.2L V8 adds an active exhaust with a sport mode.
